book metadataI’ve written extensively over the past few months about how the metadata landscape is changing for virtually all stakeholders in the publishing world today. If you’ve kept abreast of my recent posts or joined me in the webcast I hosted here last month, you’re familiar with some of the new and emerging opportunities authors and publishers now have to better describe their content, in turn helping push it into readers’ hands in more targeted ways than ever before.

Taking advantage of those opportunities is no small task, though. With the 2015 Digital Book World Conference + Expo just a week away, I’m looking forward to helping publishing professionals navigate those changes effectively. To kick things off, I’ll be facilitating the “Creating Metadata that Works” workshop at the conference on January 13th. We will explore how metadata works in the marketplace, and participants will learn the basics of creating and distributing quality metadata that promotes discovery, increases sales, and supports business needs.

In this three-hour workshop, we’ll use real metadata examples to illustrate essential metadata elements and introduce book industry metadata best practices and standards. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to create metadata using the Onixsuite system. There’s still time to join us next week, but we’re almost full so register now!

Metadata Handbook 2nd Edition CoverI’m also happy to announce that the second edition of The Metadata Handbook is almost ready. You can download a free preview here, and the PDF version of the entire book will be available from Digital Book World next week in advance of the official February 1 publication date. Workshop participants will receive a discount code for the book.

The new edition is fully updated and expanded to include the most recent information on metadata standards, practices, and use in the publishing industry. It is revised throughout for consistency with the latest versions of industry standards and best practices documentation.

Additions include:

  • Expanded and updated information on International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) and International Standard Text Code (ISTC).
  • A new section on metadata schemes with updated information about ONIX 3.0 and new subsections covering Dublin Core and schema.org.
  • A new section on standards for subjects including information on Thema as well as information about BISAC, BIC, and library subject schemes.
  • A new chapter about search engine optimization, keywords, and subjects.
  • A new chapter on metadata in digital content files, outlining options for metadata embedded within digital content files
  • A new chapter specifically addressing metadata for self-publishers and small publishers
  • Updates from industry experts on trends in metadata and publishing.
  • A revised and expanded Bibliography and References section.
  • A revised and expanded Glossary.
